If you recently brought home a puppy or kitten, one of the most important things to consider is whether or not you’ll spay/neuter them. This is because these surgeries can actually provide a number of health benefits for your dog or cat. Spaying and neutering are among the most common soft tissue pet surgeries we perform here at Kindness Animal Hospital. If you don’t plan to breed your pet, we strongly recommend that you spay/neuter them. Consider the following list of FAQs to learn more:

Why Should I Spay/Neuter My Pet?

Spaying/neutering your pet can actually lengthen your pet’s lifespan by eliminating or reducing the risks of certain health problems from developing, but there are other benefits, too. The following is a list of some of the most common benefits of spaying/neutering:

Spaying:

  • Elimination of the heat cycle and unwanted behaviors
  • Reduced risk of breast cancer and uterine infections
  • Prevention of unwanted pets, thereby reducing the pet overpopulation

Neutering:

  • Reduction of breeding instincts and roaming tendencies
  • Reduction or elimination of aggressive behavior
  • Decreased risk of testicular cancer and enlarged prostate gland
  • Prevention of unwanted pets, thereby reducing the pet overpopulation

At What Age Should I Spay/Neuter My Pet?

The age range recommendation for spaying/neutering varies for dogs and cats, and is dependent on breed. We can discuss this with you at your pet’s first visit to our hospital. However, we typically recommend that your kitten/puppy be spayed/neutered before 6 months of age and no earlier than 8 weeks. You can schedule an appointment at either of our locations in Cape Coral for spaying and neutering procedures.

Will My Pet Gain Weight After They’re Spayed/Neutered?

Some pets do gain weight after being spayed as a result of a decrease in metabolism, but this CAN be prevented with a healthy diet and sufficient exercise. Make sure your pet has enough exercise opportunities, whether it’s inside, outside, or both. If you have an indoor cat, make sure they have enough vertical space for climbing, such as a cat tower. You may also want to buy interactive toys to keep them active and at a healthy weight.
